Hippocrates and the theory of the fojr humours
Known as the ‘father of modern medicine’
The Hippocratic Corpus is a written collection of his works, allowed other doctors to learn about his knowledge.
Developed the Hippocratic oath which is still used today. Doctors promised to do their best to treat their patients
Developed the theory of the four humours. An idea that the human body was made up of four liquids: blood, phlegm, back bile and yellow bile, who h was linked to the four seasons and elements. If the humours are out of balance, then we become ill.
If a person is well then they have a ‘good sense of humour’
Used to help diagnose illnesses and suggest treatments
Treatments included: bloodletting, purging, taking a hot bath, taking laxatives
This is very important as this idea lasted continuosly throughout the medieval times. There was also a lack of scientific knowledge so people didn't challenge the theory
