Nomenclature(notes under videos)
Binary ionic compounds
2 elements
first element does not change(cation)
name the anion
has a charge
end it with ide
If it is a transition element, use roman numerals
ternary ionic compounds
3 elements
write cation name first
anion is usually a polyatomic (ammonium is an exception)
write polyatomic name
if there is a transition element, use roman numerals
formulas
write cation w/ charge
write anion w/ charge
do not change subscripts in polyatomics
ex: sulfate has to remain sulfate ( SO subscript 4)
Covalent molecules
use prefixes
first element stays the same
second element ends with “ide”
formulas
prefixes as subscripts
Hydrates
ionic compound - dot - (prefix number) water
write the word hydrate at the end
Acids
acids w/o oxygen
use the prefix hydro_____ic acid
formula
h+ anion
balance charges
acids with oxygen
ate —> ic
ite —> ous
no hydro
