Nomenclature(notes under videos)

Binary ionic compounds

  • 2 elements

  • first element does not change(cation)

  • name the anion

    • has a charge

    • end it with ide

  • If it is a transition element, use roman numerals

ternary ionic compounds

  • 3 elements

  • write cation name first

  • anion is usually a polyatomic (ammonium is an exception)

  • write polyatomic name

  • if there is a transition element, use roman numerals

  • formulas

    • write cation w/ charge

    • write anion w/ charge

    • do not change subscripts in polyatomics

      • ex: sulfate has to remain sulfate ( SO subscript 4)

Covalent molecules

  • use prefixes

  • first element stays the same

  • second element ends with “ide”

  • formulas

    • prefixes as subscripts

Hydrates

  • ionic compound - dot - (prefix number) water

  • write the word hydrate at the end

Acids

  • acids w/o oxygen

    • use the prefix hydro_____ic acid

    formula

    • h+ anion

    • balance charges

  • acids with oxygen

    • ate —> ic

    • ite —> ous

    • no hydro
