Drug - any chemical substance other than food or water that affects the human body

Addiction - a physical or psychological craving for a drug

Dependency - a state in which the person's body has adjusted to the regular use of a drug

Stimulants - drugs that increase alertness, altering a person's mood by increasing energy

Hallucinogens - can distort sensory perceptions

Depressants - drugs that slow the operation of the central nervous system

Alcoholism - addiction to alcohol

Codependency - behavior on the part of others that helps a substance abuser continue the abuse 

Decriminalization - reducing or removing severe criminal penalties that punish drug offences, especially the personal use of drugs

Jacqueline Wiseman - 1991, studies concluded that wives of alcoholics experience income uncertainty and violence 

Bill Wilson - 1935, Founded alcoholics anonymous

1920 - Prohibition, passing of the 18th amendment banning the manufacturing and sale of alcohol

1933 - 21st amendment passed, appealing the 18th amendment, ending prohibition

2018 - Philadelphia became the first city to open a “safe haven” or a safe place to inject opioids

2010 - Congress passed the Fair Sentencing Act, reduced disparity in sentencing for crack and cocaine related charges

1983 - Drug Abuse Resistance Education or D.A.R.E

1968 - Richard Nixon deemed drugs as “public enemy number one”, created the DEA or the Drug Enforcement Administration

1980s-1990s - drug wars

1989 - George H. W. Bush created the Office of National Drug Control Policy

2020 - Oregon passed Measure 110, which removes criminal penalties for possession or personal use of small amounts of cocaines, heroin, LSD, methamphetamine, and oxycodone
