Viper Radios Study Flash Cards

Q: What does a $ next to a frequency indicate?
A: Comms on that frequency will be encrypted (secure).

Q: What does an A next to a frequency indicate?
A: Comms on that frequency will use HAVE QUICK.

Q: What are some other ways of saying "encryption"?
A: "Secure," "In the green," "Encrypted."

Q: What is the name of the COM 1 radio?
A: ARC-164.

Q: The KY-58 is associated with which radio?
A: COM 1.

Q: What do you need to hear/understand an encrypted transmission?
A: The receiver must have the same crypto key as the transmitter.

Q: How do you enter/exit COM 1 HAVE QUICK mode?
A: COM 1 →
0ENTR.

Q: What three things does HAVE QUICK require for successful operation?
A: Net Type/Sub-Type and Number; Word of Day (WOD); Time of Day (TOD).

Q: If you hear a solid tone in HQ mode, what does it indicate?
A: At least one of the three required parameters is missing.

Q: When should you NOT have to do anything with the COM 1 backup control panel?
A: When maintenance loads the COMBAT WOD in the radio.

Q: In training, when entering a "WOD" on the COM 1 backup radio panel, what are you entering?
A: A singular FMT WOD (
300.050).

Q: How can you command GPS TOD on the ARC-164 since there is no GTOD option?
A: Selecting GTOD or MTOD on the ARC-210 will pass a GPS TOD to both radios 99% of the time.

Q: How do you give yourself a TOD?
A:

  1. Verify your ARC-210 has a good TOD.

  2. Tune both radios to the same frequency.

  3. Mode Select TOD on COM 1.

  4. Mode Select TTOD on COM 2.

Q: How do you receive a TOD from another jet?
A:

  1. Mode Select TOD and wait until you hear the tone.

  2. The other pilot depresses and holds the COM 1 power knob to transmit the TOD signal.

Both jets must be on the same COM 1 frequency to pass a COM 1 mickey.

: What does the ARC-210 (COM 2) radio provide?
A: Encrypted and unencrypted VHF & UHF, line-of-sight radio communications, HAVE QUICK, SATURN, SINCGARS, and SATCOM.

  1. Q: What are CTO and CT/PT?
    A: Desired encryption methods.

  2. Q: Can you manually load a WOD to the ARC-210?
    A: No.

  3. Q: How do you cycle between TOD types on the COM 2 radio?
A: Asterisks to bottom right → any button 1–9 → Mode Select desired TOD type.

  4. Q: Is there a functional difference between MTOD and GTOD?
A: Not unless you plan on using SINCGARS.

  5. Q: Which TOD selection should you avoid on the ARC-210 radio unless you want to receive a TOD signal from another jet?
    A: XTOD (External TOD).

  6. Q: What is the normal encryption mode for SATCOM?
A: ANDVT — cipher text only KYV-5. The radio transmits and receives in cipher mode only (default for SATCOM).

  7. Q: What are other ways HAVE QUICK is known as?
    A: "Active," "Anti-Jam."

  8. Q: How does HAVE QUICK work?
A: By rapidly changing the transmit/receive frequency over a wide band.

  9. Q: What is a WOD?
A: A collection of six “segments,” each six digits long — essentially a 36-digit code.

  10. Q: How many digits are HQ Net numbers?
    A: 3.

  11. Q: How many digits are HAVE QUICK preset channels?
    A: 2.

  12. Q: What is SATURN?
A: A more advanced, faster version of HAVE QUICK.
