2.5: Limbic System (Thalamus and Hypothalamus)

Describe the purposes of thalamus and hypothalamus of the limbic system.

Thalamus and Hypothalamus

The thalamus is attached to the top of the medulla. It relays messages to and from the cortex’s sensory receiving areas, the cerebellum, and the medulla. When the thalamus is not functioning properly, messages are not sent and received correctly.

The hypothalamus lies just below the thalamus and affects hunger, thirst, sexual arousal, body temperature, and some emotional responses. There is evidence to suggest that the hypothalamus is also associated with the reward center of the brain. Obesity may result from damage to the hypothalamus. Both of these function as part of the limbic system.
