Intro to the Cell
1. History of the Cell
Robert Hooke - first to name cells
Van Leeuwenhoek - first to id cells as living structures
Schleiden & Schwann - developed the Cell Theory
i. all organisms are made of cells
ii. the cell is the simplest collection of matter than can be alive
ili. cell structure is correlated to cellular function
iv. all cells are related by their descent from earlier cells
2. Cell Types and Characteristics
Prokaryotic doesn’t have organelles
Eukaryotic has organelles
b. Draw and label common characteristics below:
cell membrane: a - semipermable membrane. b- phospholipid bilayer
cytoplasm: thick liquid (gel - Like)
Genetic material: DNA
Ribosomes: protein production.
Cytoskeleton: provided structure and support.
sor protein
3. Eukaryotic Organelles
a. Nucleus
i. stores DNA, control center of cell
ii. surrounded by 2 membranes interrupted by pores
b. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
i. continuous with the nuclear envelope
ii. two distinct regions
1. smooth ER (SER): synthesizes lipids, metabolized carbs, detoxifies drugs &
poisons
2. rough ER (RER): manfactures proteins to be exported from the cell
c. Golgi Apparatus
flattened membranous sacs, cis and trans sides
ii. modifies products of the ER
ili. sorts & packages materials using transport vesicles.
