5.3.2 Local Network Types

Local Network Types

  • LAN (Local Area Network)

    • Group of physically close computers linked via a switch.

    • Can vary in size (small home network to enterprise networks).

    • Benefits include shared resources (Internet, files, printers).

  • Intranet

    • Private LAN, acts like a mini Internet for an organization.

    • Provides secure access to files (documents, spreadsheets, slideshows).

    • Enables collaboration and file sharing within a company.

  • Small Office/Home Office (SOHO)

    • Network setup for small businesses or home offices.

    • Relies on advanced routers for functionality, facilitating remote work.

Key Features of Local Area Networks

  • Network Administrators

    • Oversee LAN safety and user access.

    • Can control computers on the network remotely.

  • Speed and Efficiency

    • LANs are fast due to close proximity of devices.

    • Utilize switches and routers.

  • Security

    • Firewall protection, either built-in to routers or as separate devices.

  • Resource Sharing

    • Single Internet connection can be shared by all devices.

    • Allows for printer sharing and other resource distribution.

Network Devices and Technology

  • Switch

    • Intermediate device for creating contention-free network segments at Data Link Layer 2.

    • Unmanaged switches do not allow configuration.

  • Router

    • Device linking different network types, operates at the Network layer.

    • Capable of forwarding packets across logical networks of differing types and layers.
