  • first anglo-Powhatan war:: induced by conflict over resources between the Powhatans and the European settlers. (1609-1614) resolved following the marriage of Pocahontas (Powhatan’s daughter) and John Rolfe, a settler.
  • second anglo-Powhatan war:: induced by the attacks of the Powhatans (led by his successor) against the English settlers, as an effort to drive them out one last time. disease and destruction ensued, hurting the Englishmen, although the settlers ended up successful. (1622-1632)

  • Act of Toleration:: passed by the Maryland assembly (catholic) (1649) - tolerated Christian settlers
