History of a Plymouth Plantation
Area was settled by the Pilgrim (Puritans)
What was their religious trip?
Why are they called Puritans? They wanted to purify religion
PURITANS formed their own religion because they thought the Church of England had not gone far enough to PURIFY the abuses of the Catholic Church.
Puritans are persecuted by the English Government.
Left from Holland -- the Pilgrims left for America from Holland
Reason the Pilgrims continue their journey despite the bad weather:
They don’t want to lose their wage / money. (The crew would not be paid if they turned back)
Reasons why the Puritans arrive in America in late November:
They had to sail slowly because of their broken mast
Storms cause them to hull (stray from the original path because of the wind)
Puritan Plain Writing Style -
Simple, no extravagant expressions (understatements)
Why did the Pilgrims choose Cape Cod?
They had intended to land farther south where the winter was less severe, but storms and rough waters forced them north.
What problems did they face when the finally arrived?
Winter -- The weather is too cold for crops to grow
Defenseless against wild animals and men
No one familiar was there to welcome them
There were no towns to get supplies / resources
In the next 3 months, more than half (50) of the Pilgrims die because of disease / lack of housing
How do we know the Pilgrims are religious?
Thank God for sparing their lives on the voyage
Thank God as soon as they get to land
The healthy help the sick without worrying about their own health
Call Samoset an instrument of God
They rarely complain
This reading selection ends with the First Thanksgiving.
