EpiPen-epinephrine

  1. Hold in a strong firm grip

  2. Remove the blue cap

  3. raise blue to the sky and orange to the thigh

  4. press firmly till it clicks in the side of your thigh at arms length (roughly around your pant seem) at a 90o angle

  5. then hold for 3 seconds

Things to remember…

  • Do not use if the window is cloudy/empty

  • Store at room temperature

  • After use call 911

  • If no change wait 5-15 minuets to inject again

  • an adult has 0.3mg/0.3ml of epinephrine

  • Epi-Jr <30 kg

  • IM injection

Allergect-epinephrine

  1. Take out of case

  2. Pull red tab

  3. Place the BLACK end against the middle of the OUTER thigh. Press firmly and hold in place for 5 seconds.

Things to remember…

  • Blue is for child <30kg orange is for adults

  • can STILL be used if the battery dies

  • Cannot be reused after the red cap has been taken off

  • is light sensitive store at room temperature

Eardrops

  1. Wash your hands

  2. Warm bottle in your hands

  3. Shake gently for 10 seconds

  4. Remove the cap

  5. while laying on your side or tilting your head sideways instill drop being careful not the touch the inside of the ear

  6. clean away any excess

  7. Wait 3-5 minuets before moving

  8. repeat on other side if necessary

  9. wash hands

Things to remember…

  • If you are having difficulty gently pull your ear up and backwards to get better access

Eye Drops

  1. Wash hands

  2. Remove contacts

  3. if it says to shake gently by rolling the bottle in your hands

  4. remove cap

  5. While leaning with your head tilted back look up and instill one drop (being careful not to touch your eye) into the pocket you have created by pinching your lower-lid OR

    1. lie down and place a drop in the inner corner of your

      closed eyelid. Open your eye slowly and allow the drop to roll into your eye

  6. close your eyes for 1-2 minuets

  7. blot the excess with a tissue

  8. wait 5 minuets and repeat

  9. wash your hands

Things to remember…

  • wait 15 to put contacts back in

  • suspension/gel first then a solution then an eye-ointment last

Patch

  1. wash both hands and area the patch is going not lotions/oils etc.

    1. chest, lower stomach, top of butt, upper arm, lower back

  2. take out of package

  3. remove the backing

  4. place and hold for 30 seconds

  5. place patch on unbroken skin (no open wounds)

  6. Wash your hands

  7. leave on for 12 hours then remove

Things to remember…

  • do not shave area use scissors and clip it

  • Do not cut in half

  • once removed fold in half then dispose

Inhalants

Aerobika

  1. Assuming the device is clean with all parts accounted for

  2. Create a seal with your lips on the mouth piece makin sure your hand is not covering the main vent

  3. Take a deep breath holding in for 2-3 seconds then exhale

  4. repeat

Things to remember…

  • Exhale actively, but not forcefully, through the device. Ideally, exhalation should last 3–4 times longer than inhalation. Keep your cheeks flat and firm to maximize treatment effectiveness. Ensure you maintain a good seal on the mouthpiece for the duration of the treatment.

  • Continue taking deep breaths and long exhalations for 10–20 breaths, or as instructed by your healthcare professional. After at least 10 breaths, perform 2–3 ‘huff’ coughs to clear your airways. Your healthcare professional will instruct you on the proper technique. For maximum efficacy, try to suppress coughing until the end of the treatment.

Metered-dose inhaler

  1. Shake device

  2. For first time use or has been longer than a week prime the device

    1. Hold away for you press down 4 times making sure the product is being dispensed as it is supposed to

  3. When ready exhale

  4. Then place mouth on mouth piece creating a seal

  5. While pressing down on the device breath in deeply and slowly

  6. hold your breath for 5-10 seconds or as long as you can

  7. breath out

  8. Wait 30-60 seconds if symptoms to do not get better do it again

  9. Rinse mouth after using

  • wipe device after use with a dry Kleenex

  • clean weekly

Aerochamber

  1. connect the spacer to inhaler

  2. Breath-out away for inhaler

  3. create a seal around the inhaler

  4. instill appropriate dose into the spacer

  5. Breath in deeply and slowly

  6. hold your breath for 5-10 seconds or as long as you can

Things to remember…

  • clean spacer weekly with warm soapy water or on the top rack of the dishwasher

  • avoid scarping the inside of device

  • if not breathing properly the device will whistle

Turbohaler

Diskus

  1. After opening the inhaler with the thumb grip, hold the inhaler flat and level, and slide the lever from left to right until it clicks

  2. Breathe out fully through the mouth, away from the inhaler

  3. Put the mouthpiece in the mouth and tighten the lips around it

  4. Inhale quickly and deeply through the mouth

  5. Remove the device from the mouth and hold the breath as long as comfortably possible, up to ten second

Things to remember…

  • no priming or shaking

Ellipta

  1. Slide the inhaler cover down to reveal the mouthpiece

  2. Breathe out fully through the mouth, away from the inhaler

  3. Put the mouthpiece between the lips

  4. Do not block the air vents with the fingers

  5. Breathe in deeply and slowly through the mouth

  6. Remove the inhaler from the mouth and hold the breath for three or four seconds or as long as comfortably possible

Things to remember…

  • No shaking or priming

  • is good 6 weeks after foil is removed

  • clean with a dry tissue

Flexihaler

  1. Hold the inhaler upright and remove the cap

  2. Holding the inhaler in the middle, twist the grip as far as it will go in one direction, then back in the other direction until it clicks

  3. Breathe out fully through the mouth, away from the inhaler

  4. Put the mouthpiece in the mouth and tighten the lips around it

  5. Breathe in deeply and forcefully through the mouth

Spiriva Respimat

  1. Prime for the first time or >3 days without use

  2. Tuns base as it clicks

  3. Breathe out away from the inhaler

  4. Make a seal with your mouth around the mouthpiece making sure not to block the vent

  5. When ready press the bottom and inhale slowly and deeply

  6. Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds

Things to remember…

  • clean weekly with a damp paper towel

  • Is good for 3 months after first assembly of the device

Handi-haler

  1. Remove the inhaler cap by pressing the piercing button

  2. Pull the lid away from the inhaler to expose the mouthpiece

  3. Expose the center chamber by pulling the mouthpiece up and away from its base

  4. Place one capsule (removed from its foil blister) in the center chamber of the inhaler and close the mouthpiece until it clicks

  5. Continue to hold the inhaler with the mouthpiece pointed up, press the button on the side once, then release it

  6. Breathe out fully through the mouth, away from the inhaler

  7. Place the inhaler in a horizontal position and place the mouthpiece in the mouth, tightening the lips around it

  8. Breathe in deeply through the mouth and hold the breath for a few seconds

  9. Remove the mouthpiece from the mouth

  10. Repeat the steps starting with “Breathe out fully through the mouth” a second time

  11. Open the mouthpiece, remove the used capsule, and discard it

Things to remember…

  • No priming or shaking

  • clean after each use making sure it is fully dry when you go to use it

Peak Flow meter

  1. Stand up or sit up with a straight back.

  2. Make sure the indicator is at zero.

  3. Take a deep breath, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and blow as hard and as fast as you can into the peak flow meter.

  4. Write down the reading (your score).

  5. Set the marker back to zero. Take your peak flow reading two more times. Write down your readings (your score).

  6. Each time you test your peak flow, do three blows. The best of the three scores is your actual score. That's the score you should write down and show the doctor.

  7. Check with your asthma action plan to see if you need to make any adjustments to your daily care.

Thing to remember…

  • wash your peak flow meter in warm soapy water.

  • Rinse it gently in clear water, then let it air dry.

  • If you have a virus (cold, flu, etc), wash your peak flow meter after every use.

  • Make sure your peak flow meter is completely dry before using it.

Blood Glucose

  1. Wash your hands

  2. get a new test strip ready

  3. Take the lancing device and put a new lancet in it

  4. Take the lancing device and put it to the side of your finger press the button

  5. Squeeze finger and place the blood on the testing strips side on the line

  6. record your results

  7. eject the lacet by sticking the needle in the head of the cover and dispose in a sharps container as well as the test strip

  8. wash your hands

Blood pressure

  1. make sure your arm is bare sit for 5 minuets to get an accurate reading

  2. Take the cuff make sure the cord is running down

  3. Once comfortable tighten the cuff on your upper arm the bottom being two inches above your elbow

  4. Tighten it show you can still fit 2 fingers in between

  5. Press start

  6. take a total of 3 readings 5 minuets a part

Things to remember…

  • For best results no talking

  • do not cross your legs both feet flat on the floor

  • Use more than 3 sprays in 15 mins. If chest pain persists after 3 sprays seek medical attention

Nasal Sprays

  1. Shake gently

  2. remove cap

  3. prime a new bottle or after 1 wk of unuse or if the nozzle has just been cleaned spray away for you

  4. blow nose gently

  5. Close one nostril and tilt the nosle into the other nostril

  6. Press down and gently breath in through your nose and out through your mouth

  7. once done take off the top and rinse under warm water
