Week 3 Jan. 23 - Emotion, Motivation and Cognition
Carol Dweck, 2014
How children coped with challenge
10 year olds problems that were slightly too hard for them
“I love a challenge” - they understood their abilities can be developed (growth mindset)
“The tyranny of now” - probably cheat the next time after failure/look fir someone worse then they did to feel better about themselves (fixed mindset)
What can we do
Praise Wisely - praise their improvement
Rewarding Yet - Rewarded for effort, process and strategy
Changing Mindsets
Fixed vs. Growth

Fixed Mindset
You are either a smart person vs. not a smart person
You come as you are
Growth Mindset
If you put in enough effort you can get better
Achievement Motivation

Example: Motivation to earn a high grade in a class (internal/external standard you are working towards)
Goals
Mastery
Performance
Types of Motivation

Intrinsic
Liking the doing even if your bad at it because you enjoy doing it
Example: Dr. Van Hedger joining “Crapappella” in university and finding joy in performing with friends, regardless of the group's skill level
You can have all three types of motivation for a single activity
Example: Writing a grant - wanting to achieve well, needing the money, research is good enough for the grant
