Cosmetology Draping Procedures

General Pre-Service Preparation Steps

• Step 1: Material and Supply Preparation

  • Prepare all necessary materials and supplies required for the specific cosmetology service prior to beginning.

• Step 2: Client Greeting

  • Formally greet the client upon arrival.

• Step 3: Jewelry Removal and Storage

  • Request that the client remove all neck jewelry and hair jewelry.
  • Instruct the client to store the removed jewelry safely away.

• Step 4: Garment Preparation

  • Turn the client's collar inward to the inside of their shirt/clothing to protect it from damage or moisture.

• Step 5: Draping Execution

  • Perform the appropriate draping method following the precise order of application designated for the specific service.

Wet Hair Draping

  • Wet designs (such as rollers)
  • Fingerwaving
  • Haircuts
  • Other wet hair procedures

• Order of Application

  1. Neck strip
  2. Cape
  3. Towel

• Cape Specification

  • Use a Long Plastic Cape for all wet hair draping protocols.

Chemical Draping

• Applicable Services

  • Hair color
  • Chemical waves
  • Chemical relaxers
  • Reform curls
  • Highlights
  • Other chemical processing services

• Order of Application

  1. Towel
  2. Cape
  3. Towel

• Cape Specification

  • Use a long plastic cape for all chemical service draping protocols.

Comb-Out Draping (Dry Hair Only)

• Applicable Services

  • Comb-outs
  • Thermal styling
  • Braids
  • Flat Iron services
  • Strict Requirement: Must be performed on dry hair only.

• Order of Application

  1. Neck strip
  2. Comb out cape

• Cape Specification

  • Use a Cloth cape for dry hair comb-out draping protocols.

State Board Draping

• Applicable Services

  • Designated specifically for P.S.I. procedures (restricted to Chemical Skills only).

• Order of Application

  1. Towel
  2. Cape
  3. Tourel (Towel)

• Cape Specification

  • Use a Kiddie Cap (Kiddie Cape) for State Board P.S.I. chemical skills procedures.
