History

My version of the English Civil War

Featuring King Charles

Pg 2 Summary Title : Explain how money contributed to the outbreak of the ECW

  • So basically , Charles introduced taxes like ship tax . And the people that time are poor and angry that they have to pay more taxes.

  • Charles used the taxes money that the people paid to buy things for his wife ( Catholic queen ) .

  • Charles needed money , so he changed the prayer book . This led to Scotland invading them because they did not want the new prayer book . This led to King Charles needing money for the war and to shush them away .

  • The parliament constantly feels that Charles only goes to them when he needs money . The parliament thinks that they also should have an equal share in decision making . King Charles closed down the parliament when they refused to help him .

Parliament : Essential for decision making and making laws

Pg 3 Summary Title : Explain how religion contributed to the outbreak of the ECW

  • Most of the people are Protestant ( A religion , Christianity )  .

  • Most people in Parliament are Puritan ( Strict Protestants ) . Puritans is a group of strict Protestants who wanted to make the Church of England more pure by getting rid of practices they believed were too similar to Catholicism (Another religion I think )

  • Charles has married a Catholic ( Is a Christian who is part of the Roman Catholic tradition. )

  • He changed the prayer book

  • Tried to allow Catholics to worship as they wished. It means trying to give Catholics the freedom to practice their religion the way they wanted, without interference or restrictions.

  • Secretly being afraid about raising children as Catholics . Maybe due to the fear of punishment .

  • A very long struggle between the Catholics and the Protestant .

Pg 4 Summary Title : Explain how power contributed to the outbreak of the ECW

  • Charles believed in Divine Right ( Chosen by god so nobody should disagree with him or tell him what he should do , if they do it , it will be like disagreeing with God . )

  • Parliament believed that the king’s job was to serve the country . And therefore the parliament should make the majority of decisions instead of the king ( Charles ) .

  • Charles was too proud / arrogant so he won’t listen to other people .

  • He tried to arrest the members of the parliament .

Quiz timeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pg 5

What do you think was the most important cause of the civil war ?

I think power was the most important cause of the Civil war . This is because Charles believed in Divine right ( which means chosen by god ) . This led to the reason why he won’t listen to anyone, especially the parliament . This angered the parliament because the parliament thought that the king should be serving the country while the parliament did the decision making . Instead , Charles only went to the parliament when he needed money . And the worst part is that if the parliament refuses to do what he says , he will close down the parliament . So the cause of the war is mainly power , just because he is the king , so everyone is ordered to obey the king.

Pg 6 Summary Title : Give reasons to explain why parliament won the English Civil War

  • The parliament won mainly for its leadership skills , military defense , weapons , money , and support .

  •  The parliament controlled the rich areas , more money for resources . It gained access to food and to pay soldiers . The conclusion is that more money could afford a longer war .

  • Oliver Cromwell ( A parliamentary general )  . Because of his intelligence tactics, he rarely made any mistakes throughout the war . He made sure that the soldiers were disciplined and obeyed his orders no matter what .

  • Royalists ( people who support King Charles ) wore fancy clothes to the battle . But the parliamentarians focused more on protection so they wore armour . Another reason is that the parliamentarians are more united together than the royalists.

  • King Charles made one careless mistake . The mistake is that he asked the Catholic Irish to help him fight in the war . This upset many people because most of them disliked the Catholics . As a result more people sided with the parliament instead of the king .

  • A new model army . Parliamentarian soldiers were effectively trained , more efficient , disciplined and well equipped with weapons . The leaders were promoted based on their ability not position in society .

Pg 7 Summary

  • The Royalist and the Parliamentary armies used similar tactics and weapons during the ECW .

  • Before the battle begins , the armies will line up in a neat line .

  • In the center , there would be the infantry ( soldier who fight on foot ) brigades ( a large group of soldiers ) of musketeers            ( soldiers holding a firearm ) (It is just a large group of soldier who are fighting on foot that are equipped with a firearm)

Back to the thing , infantry brigades of musketeers and pikemen ( a men with long knives )

Infantry brigades of musketeer        Pikemen               Cavalry

  • On each side of the infantry , were the cavalry (soldier on horse) ( Cavalry is to protect the infantry )

  • The right wing would be led by the lieutenant general (one of the highest positions)

  • The left wing would be led by the commissary general (similar to the lieutenant general)

  • The heavy artillery (expensive army car) was stationed at the very end where it could fire over their heads of the infantry  (soldiers who fight on foot)

  • Smaller cannons , that fired nails and scrap iron kept in canvas bags , are positioned in front of the infantry .

Pg 8 Summary

  • Most soldiers were provided with armour that covered their chest and backs

  • Armour was expensive at that time .

  • Sometimes , some members of the infantry were forced to wear leather tunics instead

  • Although the leather tunics was completely insufficient against gunfire , these tunics did provide some decent protection against swords.

  • The pikeman carried piked that were very long

  • When the enemy obeyed the cavalry to charge , the musketeers will find a place behind and between the pikemen .

  • During the cavalry charge , the pikemen will aimed their pikes at the chest of the incoming horses

  •  Musketeers carry a matchlock (type of gun).

  • Although the matchlock was not very accurate , it could kill a man from 300 yards away

  • Because of the medical team at that time , any shot wound would result in the soldier dying.

Pg 9 Summary

  • The main disadvantage of the matchlock was the time it took to reload after every shot .

  • To solve this issue , the musketeers in the front line will fire their matchlocks

  • After firing , instead of standing there reloading , they will move to the back of the formation to reload .

  • Then , the next row of musketeers will come to the front line and fire the matchlock

  • The process will now be repeated over and over

  • Another strategy is the musketeers in the first line will be kneeling

  • The second line will be squatting

  • The third line will be standing

  • The three lines of musketeers will all fired the same time

  • After firing , all three lines will move back and will be replaced by the next upcoming three lines of musketeers

  • Then the process will be repeated again

Pg 10 Summary

  • The cavalry soldiers was armed with a short barreled musket or a flint locked carbine ( both firearms , but are smaller and easier to handle while on a horse )

  • They also carry a sword for close combat

  • For the initial charge , the cavalry will advanced in a quick trot ( moderate speed ) towards the enemy , they will stop when they are within firing range

  • The cavalry in the front line will fired their guns towards the enemy

  • After firing , instead of reloading there , they will turn their horse and move back or to the side

  • For the second charge , after the soldier regroup , they will go at full gallop ( maximum speed )

  • Instead of relying on their firearms , they use swords for hand to hand combat , aiming to break through the enemy lines of force.

  • In the civil war , the starting move usually involved the cavalry .

  • At the beginning of the battle , the cavalry from both sides were sent to the front to scared the opposing cavalry away

  • Their goal was to fight and force the opposing cavalry to go away

  • The main purpose for that is to gain control of the war

  • Once the opposing cavalry went away , the victorious cavalry could turn their attention to the enemy infantry

Pg 11 summary

Describe the dangers faced by the musketeer on the battlefield during the ECW

Answer : The main danger to the musketeers was the cavalry . This is because the musketeers were very at risk if the cavalry charged straight at him . As it took time to reload the gun , the musketeers were particularly unsafe after he had fired his shot . If is possible , the musketeers will hind behind and between the pikemen during a cavalry attack
