Sacraments 1–7

1) Baptism

· Matter: Water

· Form: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

· Minister: Priest or deacon (in emergency, anyone can baptize)

· Graces: Forgiveness of original sin and personal sins, new life in Christ, member of the Church.

2) Confirmation

· Matter: Chrism oil, laying on of hands

· Form: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

· Minister: Bishop (priest may with permission)

· Graces: Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, deeper bond with the Church, courage to witness faith.

3) Eucharist

· Matter: Wheat bread and grape wine

· Form: “This is my body… This is the chalice of my blood…”

· Minister: Priest or bishop

· Graces: Spiritual nourishment, union with Christ, grace for living the Christian life.

4) Confession (Penance / Reconciliation)

· Matter: The sins confessed by the penitent

· Form: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

· Minister: Priest

· Graces: Forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God and the Church, spiritual strength.

5) Matrimony

· Matter: Mutual consent and the couple themselves

· Form: The vows exchanged by bride and groom

· Minister: The couple (priest or deacon as official witness for the Church)

· Graces: Grace for lifelong fidelity, love, unity, and raising children in the faith.

6) Holy Orders

· Matter: The laying on of hands

· Form: Prayer of consecration for the specific order (bishop, priest, deacon)

· Minister: Bishop

· Graces: Configuration to Christ as priest, prophet, and king; grace to serve the Church in ministry.

7) Anointing of the Sick

· Matter: Oil of the Sick

· Form: “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit… May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.”

· Minister: Priest

· Graces: Strength in illness, forgiveness of sins, possible physical healing, preparation for passing to eternal life.
