Definition

All matter is either acidic, basic or neutral. We use pH to measure acidity and basicity

Acid

  • Sour in taste

  • pH < 7

  • Corrosive

  • Conducts electricity

  • Converts blue litmus paper to red

Examples: vinegar, lemon juice, battery acid, soda

Base

  • Bitter in taste

  • pH>7

  • Corrosive

  • Conducts electricity

  • Converts red litmus to blue

Examples: baking soda, ammonia, soap, borax

Indicators

Indicators are chemicals that show a change in colour when brought in contact with acids and bases

Litmus Test

  • Blue litmus paper turns red in an acidic solution

  • Red litmus paper turns blue in basic solutions

Universal Indicator

  • Warm colors are acids, and the redder it is, the stronger it is.

  • Cold colors are bases, and the purpler it is, the stronger of a base it is.

Natural Indicators:

  • Bunga sepatu

  • Bunga bougainville

  • Kulot manggis

  • Kubis ungu

  • Kunyit

  • Pacar air
