3.2 Alternate Care Pathways

Flashcards – Alternate Care Pathways

Q: What are alternate care pathways?
A: Referral options for low-risk patients instead of ED transport, based on thorough assessment and shared decision-making.

Q: What does "low-risk" mean in paramedic care?
A: Patient doesn’t need ED investigation/treatment, no red flags, no severe comorbidities, has decision-making capacity, understands advice, and is unlikely to deteriorate.

Q: Give 3 examples of alternate care providers.
A: Virtual ED, GP, community health centres (also: walk-in clinics, aged care teams, palliative, mental health).

Q: Why is “low risk ≠ no risk”?
A: Patients aren’t continuously monitored, may miss serious conditions, and can unexpectedly deteriorate outside ED.

Q: What is safety netting?
A: Providing patients with clear instructions on warning signs, when to seek urgent help, follow-up care, and written/QR code resources.

Q: What is included in patient info sheets (e.g., gastro)?
A: Condition overview, home care advice, prevention, red flag symptoms, escalation instructions (000/GP), support resources.
