Understanding Poisoning
Goal: Learn to identify poisoned individuals and provide assistance.
Modes of Contact:
Ingestion
Inhalation
Absorption (contact)
Insects or animals
Recognizing and Responding to Poisoning
Ingested Poison
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored lips, strange odors or burns around mouth.
Action: Seek medical assistance or contact the poison control center; identify poison type if possible.
Inhaled Poison
Symptoms: Breathing difficulty, chest pain, headache, dizziness.
Action: Immediately move person to fresh air.
Contact/Absorbed Poison
Symptoms: Blisters, swelling, burns.
Action: Identify substance, rinse irritated area with water. Seek medical assistance or call poison control.
Poison Control Center
Information to Provide: Patient's age, height, weight; ingredients from poison container (if available).
Role: Provides treatment directions.
Performing CPR on a Poisoned Victim
Precaution: Take steps to prevent self-contamination, especially if the poison was ingested.
