Understanding Poisoning
  • Goal: Learn to identify poisoned individuals and provide assistance.

  • Modes of Contact:

    • Ingestion

    • Inhalation

    • Absorption (contact)

    • Insects or animals

Recognizing and Responding to Poisoning
  • Ingested Poison

    • Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored lips, strange odors or burns around mouth.

    • Action: Seek medical assistance or contact the poison control center; identify poison type if possible.

  • Inhaled Poison

    • Symptoms: Breathing difficulty, chest pain, headache, dizziness.

    • Action: Immediately move person to fresh air.

  • Contact/Absorbed Poison

    • Symptoms: Blisters, swelling, burns.

    • Action: Identify substance, rinse irritated area with water. Seek medical assistance or call poison control.

Poison Control Center
  • Information to Provide: Patient's age, height, weight; ingredients from poison container (if available).

  • Role: Provides treatment directions.

Performing CPR on a Poisoned Victim
  • Precaution: Take steps to prevent self-contamination, especially if the poison was ingested.
