Glycogenesis (Glucose Storage)

Glycogenesis is the process of converting glucose to glycogen for storage. It occurs in the liver and skeletal muscles.

Steps:

  1. Glucose Uptake:

    • Glucose enters the cell via GLUT transporters and is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate by hexokinase (or glucokinase in the liver).

  2. Conversion to Glucose-1-Phosphate:

    • Glucose-6-phosphate is converted to glucose-1-phosphate by the enzyme phosphoglucomutase.

  3. Activation:

    • Glucose-1-phosphate is activated by UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, forming UDP-glucose.

  4. Glycogen Formation:

    • Glycogen synthase adds glucose units to a growing glycogen chain. Branching enzyme introduces branches, increasing solubility and storage efficiency.
