Limited Government- Limited government means that the government only has certain powers

Social Contract- The people give up some freedoms in exchange for the government protecting their rights

Natural Rights- There are basic human rights that can not be abolished. These are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 

Republicanism- representative government people rule indirectly via elected representatives

Popular Sovereignty- people have the power. 

Participatory Democracy- citizens have the power to decide directly on policy, and politicians implement their policy decisions → closest to direct democracy (like Switzerland) 

Pluralist Democracy- people organize into groups, and the groups compete with each other to influence policy eg. political parties or interest groups → in the middle of the democratic scale 

Elite Democracy- a small number of upper-class citizens influence policymaking
