11.1 Sources of Light
- The Sun is the primary natural light source, emitting its own light.
- Other natural sources include stars, lightning, natural fire, and certain animals.
- Humans initially used fire as artificial lighting, utilizing various fuels like animal fat, oil, wax, and gas.
- Electric lighting now fulfills most human lighting needs.
- Luminous objects emit their own light.
- Non-luminous objects do not emit their own light; they reflect light from other sources (e.g., the Moon reflects sunlight).
- LED lamps are modern, energy-efficient light sources promoted by the Indian government. They require proper disposal or recycling.
11.2 Does Light Travel in a Straight Line?

11.3 Light Through Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque Materials

- Opaque materials block light completely.

11.4 Shadow Formation
- Shadows are formed when an opaque object blocks the path of light.
- A dark patch appears where light does not reach.
- Opaque objects form darker shadows; translucent objects form lighter shadows; transparent objects may produce faint shadows.
- A light source, an opaque object, and a screen are needed to observe a shadow.
- The shape, size, and sharpness of the shadow depend on the object's position relative to the light source and screen.
- Changing the color of opaque objects does not change the color of their shadows.
11.5 Reflection of Light
- Shiny surfaces or mirrors change the direction of light, known as reflection.
- Activity 11.5: Redirecting sunlight using a mirror to create a spot of light on a wall.

- A thin slit is created using a comb and black paper.

11.6 Images Formed in a Plane Mirror

- The image cannot be obtained on a screen.

Lateral inversion: The left side appears as the right side in the image, and vice versa.
The word 'AMBULANCE' is written laterally inverted so it can be read correctly in rear-view mirrors.
11.7 Pinhole Camera
- A pinhole camera creates an image by passing light through a tiny hole onto a screen.

- A small hole in a cardboard projects an inverted image of a candle flame on a screen.
- Demonstrates that Pinhole images are inverted upside down.

11.8 Making Some Useful Items
11.8.1 Periscope

- Used in submarines, tanks, and bunkers.
11.8.2 Kaleidoscope
- A kaleidoscope uses three rectangular mirror strips in a triangular arrangement to create patterns.
- Designers and artists often use kaleidoscopes to get ideas for new patterns.
- Broken pieces of colored bangles or beads are placed at one end to create colorful patterns.
