Distance and Depth Perception
Depth or Distance Perception
Refers to the organization of perception in three dimensions.
Our mental representation of the world has three-dimensional properties, despite the information projected onto our retina being two-dimensional.
We use various cues in a visual scene to establish our sense of depth.
Types of Depth Cues
Binocular Cues: Rely on input from both eyes.
Monocular Cues: Can be gleaned from the visual input from just one eye.
Depth perception requires vision.
Monocular Depth Cues
Depth cues that use information from just a single eye.
Even with one eye covered, vision still retains some three-dimensionality.
Able to do things like pick up a pen, move around, and catch a ball.
