Purpose of the Digestive System

  • Obtain nutrients from food: The primary role of the digestive system is to extract nutrients from ingested food.
  • Two main objectives:
    1. Digestion: Food must be broken down into absorbable nutrients.
    • Mechanical digestion: Physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces.
    • Chemical digestion: Breakdown of biomacromolecules into their subunits using enzymes.
    1. Absorptive Surface Area: Sufficient surface area is required for effective absorption of nutrients.

Digestion Processes

Mechanical Digestion

  • Definition: Involves breaking food into smaller pieces without altering its chemical nature (e.g., a potato is still a potato, just in smaller bits).
  • Importance: Increases surface area to volume ratio for more efficient subsequent chemical digestion.

Chemical Digestion

  • Definition: Changes the chemical composition of food; it employs enzymes that accelerate the breakdown of food.
  • Enzymes: Proteins that facilitate chemical reactions without being consumed.
    • Sensitive to pH and temperature; each enzyme has an optimal pH where it works best.

Enzymatic Roles in Digestion

  • Lipids: Broken into fatty acids and glycerol by lipases.
  • Complex Carbohydrates: Broken into simple sugars (monosaccharides) by amylases.
  • Proteins: Broken down into amino acids by proteases.
  • Key Terms:
    • Biomacromolecule: Large organic molecules such as proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids.

Anatomy of the Digestive System

    • Oesophagus: Transports food to stomach via peristalsis.

    • Small Intestine: Major site for enzymatic digestion and nutrient absorption; features villi and microvilli to increase surface area.
    • Large Intestine: Absorbs water and stores fecal material; contains a rich microbiota contributing to various metabolic functions.
    • Liver: Detoxifies chemicals, metabolizes drugs, and produces bile for lipid digestion.
    • Gall Bladder: Stores and concentrates bile, aiding in lipid emulsification and digestion.
    • Pancreas: Produces pancreatic juices rich in digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid.

Specialized Digestive Structures in Other Animals

  • Ruminants: Have a four-chambered stomach allowing fermentation of plant material.
    • Regurgitate and rechew food (cud) for extended digestion.
  • Gizzard: Muscular stomach in certain animals (e.g., birds) that grinds food.
  • Crop: Food storage pouch found in some birds, located in the oesophagus.
