Bex’s Genre Theory
Linguist Tony Bex stated that genres can be defined in two main ways
1- Linguistic conventions, The typical features of register that you would expect in that type of genre (e.g. sports reports have lots of active verbs and technical lexis)
ideological conventions- the attitudes and values that lie behind a text in this genre (e.g. a shampoo advert assumes that you want to look like the Hollywood star who is endorsing the product) Both of these conventions can change over time
