HB Lecture 1

The Human Biology course (BIOL14108) conducted by Dr. Marcus Freeman covers physiology, anatomy, and the organization of the human body. Key topics include:

  • Physiology: Study of living matter function, including feeding, movement, reproduction, and adaptation.

  • Anatomy: Knowledge of structure helps understand function; it includes gross anatomy and histology.

  • Levels of Organization: Ranges from chemical and cellular to tissue, organ, system, and organism levels.

  • Cells: Basic building blocks containing organelles and capable of metabolism; specialized through differentiation.

  • Tissues: Groups of cells working together, categorized into principal types such as connective, muscle, and epithelial tissue.

  • Homeostasis: Stable internal environment regulated by feedback mechanisms, including negative feedback which counteracts changes.

  • Organ Systems: Include skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and respiratory systems, among others, which work together to maintain life.

  • Chemistry Basics: Composed of elements; water as vital for life; major organic molecules in the body include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
