Method for required practical 12

Null hypothesis

The aspect of a tree doesn’t have an effect on the lichen growth

Equipment list

-light probe

-PH probe

  1. Create a 100m by 100m area and select random coordinates using a random number generator (Due to limited workspace we will take measurements from all of the trees)

  2. Using the Quadrat place it on the the North facing side (using compass) of the tree (note the height at which the lichen grows most effectively and be consistent in sampling each side)

  3. Record percentage cover of lichen within the quadrat (ensure you line quadrat up using the top left corner each time) as well as light intensity and temperature

  4. Repeat for East, South and West of the tree before moving onto the next one

  5. Calculate mean of each aspect

  6. Then calculate the Standard deviations of each aspect

  7. Use the chi squared test to identify if the data is significant

  8. Conclude then evaluate why the results have occurred
