Classification of Matter & Pure Substances

Classification of Matter

  • Matter divides into:
    • Pure Substances
    • Elements: Metals, Non-metals, Metalloids
    • Compounds
    • Mixtures (Impure Substances)
    • Homogeneous
    • Heterogeneous

Pure Substances

  • Composed of only one type of atom or one type of molecule.
  • Examples: Diamond, Salt, Sulphur, Tin

Characteristics of Pure Substances

  • Definite Composition: Uniform, homogeneous\text{homogeneous} throughout.
  • Inseparability by Physical Means: Cannot be split into other matter using physical processes (e.g., filtration, distillation).
  • Consistent Properties: Physical & chemical properties (density, color, hardness) remain constant.
