Classification of Matter & Pure Substances
Classification of Matter
- Matter divides into:
- Pure Substances
- Elements: Metals, Non-metals, Metalloids
- Compounds
- Mixtures (Impure Substances)
- Homogeneous
- Heterogeneous
Pure Substances
- Composed of only one type of atom or one type of molecule.
- Examples: Diamond, Salt, Sulphur, Tin
Characteristics of Pure Substances
- Definite Composition: Uniform, homogeneous throughout.
- Inseparability by Physical Means: Cannot be split into other matter using physical processes (e.g., filtration, distillation).
- Consistent Properties: Physical & chemical properties (density, color, hardness) remain constant.
