Comprehensive Study Notes: The Evolution and Scope of Psychology

Foundations and Scope of Psychology

• Definition of Psychology:

  • Psychology is the science that studies behavior and the physiological and cognitive processes that underlie behavior, and it is the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems.

  • Etymology: Derived from two Greek words: psyche (meaning the soul, spirit, or mind) and logos (referring to the study of a subject).

  • Historical Terminology: First combined in the 16th century to distinguish the mind/soul from the body. Gained widespread usage in the early 18th century as "the study of the mind."

• Real-World Case Studies in Pathological Gambling:

  • Greg Hogan: A college sophomore, Baptist minister's son, class president, orchestra cellist, and part-time chaplain's office worker who robbed a bank in 2005 using a fake gun to steal $2,800 after losing $5,000 playing online poker.

  • Moshe Pergament: A 19-year-old community college student who engaged in "suicide by cop" after losing $6,000 betting on the World Series, brandishing a plastic gun at police while leaving a note.

Prevalence: Up to 10$N > 72,000$) by Crede and Kuncel (2008) showed study skills, habits, and attitudes predict college grades nearly as effectively as standardized admissions tests (SAT/ACT).

  • Student Overconfidence: Foster et al. (2017) demonstrated that students maintain persistently overconfident score predictions across 13 consecutive weekly exams, failing to adjust despite receiving accurate performance feedback.

• Core Study Strategies:

  1. Written Scheduling: Establish explicit, written weekly time blocks for study sessions to prevent procrastination and avoid cramming.

  2. Sleep Hygiene: Sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance, attention, and memory consolidation. Sacrificing sleep to study leads to reduced exam performance (Gillen-O'Neel et al., 2013). Adults require at least 7 hours of sleep per night (Watson et al., 2015).

  3. Study Environment: Study in low-distraction environments. Multitasking severely reduces learning efficiency (Chew, 2014; Ravizza et al., 2014).

  4. Self-Reinforcement: Apply behavior modification principles by providing immediate tangible rewards upon completing scheduled study goals.

• Optimizing Reading Comprehension:

  • Utilize textbook learning aids (outlines, learning goals) as advance organizers.

  • Trade-off between reading speed and comprehension (Rayner et al., 2016): Rushing through text impairs retention.

  • Text Highlighting: Unselective highlighting provides minimal benefit (Bartoszewski & Gurung, 2015; Dunlosky et al., 2013). Highlighting is effective only when selectively applied to main ideas, key supporting details, and technical terms.

• Maximizing Lecture Learning:

  • Attendance: Strongly correlates with course performance and overall GPA (Crede, Roch, & Kieszczynska, 2010).

  • In-Class Laptop Usage: Surfing the Internet during lectures degrades course grades regardless of ability (Ravizza et al., 2014). Students spend ~40% of class time on non-academic tasks (Ravizza et al., 2016), which also distracts neighboring peers (Sana, Weston, & Cepeda, 2013). Laptop note-taking encourages verbatim transcription, leading to shallower cognitive processing compared to longhand note-taking (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014).

  • Active Note-Taking Strategies: Listen actively, write thoughts in one's own words, identify structural clues/outlines, and revise notes shortly after class (Luo et al., 2016).

Developing Critical Thinking Skills

• Definition:

  • Critical thinking is purposeful, reasoned, goal-directed thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating probabilities, and making decisions.

• Two Primary Components:

  1. Cognitive Component: Knowledge of transcontextual critical thinking skills and strategies.

  2. Affective Component: Dispositions and attitudes (flexibility, persistence, willingness to plan, mindfulness of thought processes).

• Instructional Necessity:

  • Critical thinking skills do not develop automatically from standard subject instruction and must be explicitly taught (Nisbett, 1993).

• Case Example: Evaluating Evolutionary Explanations of Visual-Spatial Sex Differences:

  • Empirical Finding: Males score slightly higher on visual-spatial tasks involving mental rotation and spatial navigation (Halpern, 2012; Clint et al., 2012).

  • Evolutionary Explanation: Silverman and Choi (2016) proposed that division of labor in ancient hunter-gatherer societies selected for male spatial navigation and mental rotation skills during hunting, while selecting for female location memory skills during gathering (Silverman & Eals, 1992).

  • Critical Thinking Strategy 1: Looking for Alternative Explanations:

    • Gender-typed socialization: Boys engage more in spatial play activities (building blocks, Lego sets, spatially oriented video games) that directly build spatial abilities (Jirout & Newcombe, 2015; Doyle, Voyer, & Cherney, 2012).

  • Critical Thinking Strategy 2: Looking for Contradictory Evidence:

    • Burke, Kandler, and Good (2012) found no male advantage in real-world spatial navigation tasks.

    • Historical/anthropological evidence shows women traveled significant distances during gathering and participated in hunting, while ancient men required strong location memory to return safely from long hunts.
