Notes on Grace, Sin, and Temptation

The Significance of Our Attitude

  • Our attitude towards other people is a direct reflection of what we truly believe about God's grace and its work in our lives.

  • We cannot hide from God or evade accountability; He sees all.

Understanding Unconfessed Sin

  • An Unnecessary Burden: Unconfessed sin is a self-imposed burden that we carry alone, which is entirely unnecessary.

  • God's Awareness and Eagerness to Help: Confessing sin means bringing it into the light, acknowledging what God already perceives. God is actively eager to provide assistance, support, and facilitate:

    • Transformation: A fundamental change in character and behavior.

    • Redemption: Being bought back or delivered from sin.

    • Sanctification: A "churchy word" referring to the process of being made holy and set apart for God's purposes, involving the fleeing of sinful patterns to live according to His will and intention.

  • Inability to Hide from God: In light of God's attributes—He is alive, all-powerful, and good—and His "sharp eye" of discernment, hiding unconfessed sin from Him is impossible.

Battling Temptation: A Jesus-Informed Approach

  • We are called to battle temptation in the same manner that Jesus did.

  • According to John chapter 1, Jesus is characterized by being full of both grace and truth.

The Role of Grace and Truth in Our Battles

  • Grace and Grudges: When contemplating personal struggles with temptation, it's important to recognize the connection between grace and grudges.

    • Holding grudges against others hinders our ability to effectively fight temptation. Embracing grace by letting go of grudges can strengthen our resolve against temptation.

Approaching God's Throne of Grace with Confidence

  • Drawing from the profound lessons of previous discussions (referencing content from chapter four and reflections on the story of betrayal of God's people), and understanding God's nature, we are urged to take a specific action.

  • Hebrews 4:16: "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

  • Sufficiency of Christ: When we approach God's throne, we discover the complete sufficiency of Christ; He is everything we require for our needs.

  • Aaron's Blessing: The narrative also references a blessing God bestowed upon Aaron, the first high priest in the story of Israel, signifying God's continued provision and favor.
