Portrait of an Artist

Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania.

She was the fifth child to be born in her family.

Her mother loved Europe so she managed to take the family abroad for a long stay.

After some years, they returned back to United States where Mary received her education.

But her family went back to Philadelphia to the suburbs. Mary became interested in Art.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts - where Mary studied for 4 years.

Mary told a French interview.

she decided to make a painting her career in 1868.

Shes 24 in 1868

She told her whole family she would go to Italy

The family went to Paris with their younger children to be nearer Mary.

Parma- found the works of Correggio who lived in early 1500s

She studied his work for 8 months

Spain- saw the masterpieces of Peter Paul Rubens Belgian artist in Madrid’s Prado Museum

Antwerp, Belgium- where she could get all the knowledge of Ruben

When she sent a painting to the annual salon she was 28

Next her painting was accepted again

The salon rejected a portrait of her sister lydia

Edgar Degas was Mary’s friend

He asked her to join the Impressionist movement

In the show at 1879 in paris exhibited a painting call La Loge

It showed a girl in a box at the opera smiling holding a fan

Paul Gauguin praised mary’s work Mademoiselle cassatt

1890 exhibition in paris of japanese prints

In 1891mary had her first single artist show

Mary backe one of america’s great aritists
