Opening Adobe Photoshop CS4
Launch the application using:
PC: Start > Programs > Adobe > Photoshop CS4
Or click the shortcut on the desktop.
Setting Up the Document
Proper setup of the document enhances workflow.
Requires advanced planning based on final output type (e.g., brochure).
To create a new document:
Click File > New to open the Document Setup dialog.

Users can:
Name the file.
Set page size and orientation.
Page Size and Orientation
Change page size by entering new width and height values.
Page size reflects the final size after bleeds or trimming.
Common sizes available in the Preset dropdown (e.g., letter, legal, tabloid).
Typing exact dimensions provides more control.
Resolution:
Higher resolution = better quality but larger file size.
Standard for printed images: 150-300 DPI; for web images: 72 DPI.
Color Mode
Select a color mode based on project requirements:
RGB for web graphics.
CMYK for print images.
Background Contents: Options include:
White, Color, or Transparent.
Click OK after configuring settings.
Opening an Image from a Disk
Steps to open an image:
Select File > Open.
Navigate to the disk where the image is saved.
Choose the image file and click Open.
Save under a new name via File > Save As to preserve original.

Application Bar and Tools Panel
Application Bar:

Document Window
Displays the working file.
Document windows can be tabbed or grouped.
Panels
Help monitor and modify work.
Examples: Timeline, Layers panel.
Panels can be grouped, stacked, or docked.
Interface Layout Overview
Menus include:
File, Edit, Image, Layer, Select, Filter, View, Window, Help.
Tools are easily accessible in the Tool bar.
Each opened image appears in its own window with the Image Name displayed.
Palettes:
Functions for monitoring and modifying images (e.g., Color, Adjustments, Layers).
Palettes can be managed through Window > [desired palette].

Color Palette:
Displays foreground and background colors with RGB values.
Swatches Palette:
Choose or customize foreground/background colors.
Styles Palette:
View, select, and apply preset layer styles; can create new styles as well.
Adjustment Layers and Masks
Adjustment Layers:
Apply effects to groups of layers and editable afterward.
Masks:
Grayscale images indicating selected and unselected areas (black hides, white shows, gray for varying transparency).
Layers
Organizes work into distinct levels (at least one layer per document).
Layers enable individual editing of elements.
Backgrounds can convert into layers for more versatility.
Layers represent transparency sheets with editable images.
Layer Features
Layer Visibility:
Eye icon indicates visibility status.
Layer Locking Options:
Lock transparency, image, position, or all options.
Layer Blending Mode:
Defines how layer blends with underlying pixels, creating various effects.
Fill & Opacity:
Control image/object transparency and overall layer transparency.
Additional Layer Options
Layer Options Menu:
Options include New Layer, Duplicate Layer, Delete Layer, etc.
Link Layers:
Link layers for collective manipulation.
Layer Styles:
Visible if a style is applied, indicated by the "F" icon.
Access style options via the triangle menu.
Advanced Layer Management
Layer Mask:
Grayscale image displaying transparency (black hides, white shows).
Layer Set:
Organizes multiple layers into a folder.
Create New Fill/Adjustment Layer:
Similar functionalities as image layers; can be adjusted or deleted.
Creating New Layers:
Use the corresponding icon to add new layers.
Deleting Layers:
