Music in Indonesia

Indonesia’s ensemble is called Gamelan. it came from the word gamel which means “to hammer”.

Instruments

  • kendang/kendhang- is a double headed drum from indonesia. it leads the ensemble.

  • suling- is the only blown aerophone in the gamelan ensemble

  • celempung- the a zither with 13 pairs of metal strings

    • Bonang- is a set of gongs in Gamelan ensemble

    • Saron- is a metallophone struck with a mallet

    • Slenthem- is the instrument that plays the melody in Gamelan

There are 2 gamelan orchestras

  • Javanese gamelan- the slower and more traditional type of gamelan orchestra

  • Balinese gamelan- the more fast-paced type of gamelan orchestra

Music in Cambodia

Cambodia’s ensemble is called Pinpeat. It usually has 9-12 instrument included.

Instruments

  • Oneat/Roneat- is the cambodian xylophone made of wood or bamboo.

  • Chhing- is a pair of finger cymbals

  • Samphor- a double-headed drum played with both hands

Music in Myanmar

There is no exact traditional ensemble because of the music. it is a melodious orchestra without any harmonious tunes. (T. Kristal put Hsaing Waing as the ensemble though)

Instruments

  • Saung Gauk- is called the Myanmar harp or Burma Harp. is Myanmar’s traditional harp

  • Pat Waing- Myanmar’s double-headed drum that lead the Hsaing Waing

Music of Thailand

Thailand’s traditional music ensemble is called Piphat.

Instruments

  • Ranak Ek- an alto xylophone with 21 bars

    • Ranak Lek Ek- is a smaller metallophone

    • PiNai- is a vertical bamboo flute

    • Taphon- is a barrel shaped drum
