Bearings/navigation
Understanding Bearings
Bearings are a way to measure the direction of an angle, typically used in navigation and cartography.
They are expressed in degrees from north (0°) in a clockwise direction.
Basic Rules
Bearings are written in three figures (e.g., 045°, 230°, 312°).
The first figure denotes the direction from North (0°) or South (180°).
Bearings should always be measured in a clockwise direction.
Converting Between Bearings
To convert from a compass direction to a bearing, identify the angle from North or South.
For example, East (E) corresponds to 090°, West (W) to 270°.
To find the bearing of angle A from point B, measure the angle from the North in a clockwise direction.
Calculating Bearings
Bearings can be calculated using triangulation methods or directional movement along a chart.
Use adjacent angles to determine the relative bearings between two points.
Always verify calculations by checking against known points or visual landmarks.
