THEME

1) The steps for finding a theme (topic addressed in the work, examples of how it's addressed in the work, full sentence explaining what the author is trying to tell us about that topic)
2) The requirements of a theme (good full sentence, doesn't contain specific characters or plot points so it can be universally applied, not too obvious or cliche, not a piece of advice)
3) The Theme Worksheet we did in class
4) Maslows Needs Pyramid (know the title of each level and some examples that fit into each)
5) A basic understanding of the Great Depression, what life was like as men traveled looking for work, and what a bindle is and why they carried it

Theme - what the author is trying to convey. We don't have to agree w/ author/eachother 


Process 

  1. Pick a topic 

  2. Look for examples of how the author addresses the topic. At least 2 

  3. Craft a theme that explains what the author says about that topic 


Rules

  1. Has to be a full sentence 

  2. Don't include specific characters or plot points, needs to be a universal theme 

  3. Don’t be super obvious or cliche. Ex. Don't say “war is bad” tell us specifically why war is bad 

  4. Don't give advice. Avoid “we/you should”

  5. Generally give a strong argument, and avoid surface level. 


Example:  tortoise and the hare

  1. Perseverance 

  2. Tortoise keeps going until the end 

  3. The author is saying: disadvantages don't have to make situations unsurpassable if one perseveres
