Uneven heating of the earth

The earth is heated unevenly by the sun.

There are three key reasons why:

The tilt of the Earth on its axis- the sun hits the earth at different angles

The shape of the earth- also because the sun hits the earth at different angles

the composition of the earth- land heats and cools quicker than water

***The overall MAIN reason is because the sun’s rays hit different parts of the earth at different angles

Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the earth

Winds are named for where they blow from

Winds blow from high pressure areas to low pressure areas.

Local winds blow over short distances

sea breeze-during the day, low pressure air over the land rises, high pressure air from over the ocean moves into replace it, cool breeze

land breeze-at night, low pressure air over the water rises, high pressure air from over the land moves in to replace it, cool breeze over the water

Global winds blow over longer distances, including trade winds, doldrums, horse latitudes, jet streams, polar easterlies, westerlies
