Comprehensive Study Guide to Human Anatomy, Body Systems, and Terminology

Anatomical Position and Terminology

  • Anatomical Position Definition and Criteria:

    • The standard reference posture used in anatomy.
    • Individual is standing straight.
    • Individual is facing forward.
    • Arms are placed at the sides of the body.
    • Palms are facing forward.
  • Patient Reference Frame:

    • Right (R) and Left (L) anatomical terms always use the patient's frame of reference.
    • For example, the patient's right hand corresponds to their own right side, not the hand seen on the right side from the perspective of an observer or practitioner looking at the patient.

Directional Terms and Terms of Laterality

  • Directional Terms:

    • Superior (Cephalic / Cranial): Positioned above or toward the head/upper part of a structure.
    • Inferior (Caudal / Plantar): Positioned below or toward the lower part of a structure.
    • Anterior (Ventral): Positioned toward the front of the body.
    • Posterior (Dorsal): Positioned toward the back of the body.
    • Proximal: Nearer to the center of the body or point of attachment.
    • Distal: Farther from the center of the body or point of attachment.
    • Medial: Toward the midline of the body.
    • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.
    • Superficial: Close to the surface of the body.
    • Deep: Internal; away from the body surface.
  • Terms of Laterality:

    • Unilateral: Pertaining to one side of the body.
    • Bilateral: Pertaining to two (both) sides of the body.
    • Ipsilateral: Located on the same side of the body.
    • Contralateral: Located on the opposite side of the body.

Body Planes and Sections

  • Frontal (Coronal) Plane:

    • Lies vertically.
    • Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
  • Transverse Plane:

    • Runs horizontally.
    • Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
  • Sagittal Planes:

    • Lie vertically.
    • Divide the body into right and left sides.
  • Midsagittal Plane:

    • Passes exactly down the middle of the body.
    • Divides the body into equal right and left sides.
  • Oblique Plane:

    • Lies at an angle (diagonal) relative to the horizontal and vertical planes.

Abdominal Quadrants and Regions

  • Abdominal Quadrants and Internal Organs:

    • Upper Left / ULA (Upper Left Abdomen): Contains the Pancreas, Stomach, and Large Intestine.
    • Upper Right / URO (Upper Right Abdomen): Contains the Esophagus, Liver, and Gallbladder.
    • Lower Right / RLA (Lower Right Abdomen): Contains the Appendix, as well as the Large and Small Intestine.
    • Lower Left / LLA (Lower Left Abdomen): Contains the Small and Large Intestine.
