The "Machine for Living"

  • Context: Built outside Paris after WWI. Le Corbusier believed the old way of building was dead. He wanted to use industrial math to solve housing.

  • Form: A white box hovering on thin stilts (pilotis), appearance of floating. It uses his "Five Points of Architecture," including a flat roof garden and long "ribbon" windows.

    • “Domino construction system”

  • Function: A weekend getaway home for the Savoye family. It was designed specifically to accommodate the movement of a car (the driveway curves to match the turning radius of a 1929 automobile).

  • Content: It’s all about health and logic. The stilts lift the house away from the "unhealthy" dirt. The interior has a ramp instead of stairs to create a "promenade" (a fancy walk) through the house.
