At the Bus Stop, One Autumn Morning  By M. W. Field

There is a certain feeling of disconnect from oneself in this poem. The dinosaur seems to be very unsure and detached.

Theme:

  • On the surface: This poem is from the perspective of a stegosaurus and how it feels within a public area.
  • Identity: “The deeper” meaning is the sense of belonging . The dinosaur is hyper-vigilant of its “appearance” to others in the beginning.

Metaphor:

  • Field uses metaphor to relate to an insecure person, dinosaurs are traditionally “big and scary” and it wants to impress others but is unable to.

The poem also uses descriptive words to imply the dinosaur overthought everything about its appearance and physical feeling.

“No buses came” refers to the fact that no one else had thought quite as much about the stegosaurus as it had. The bus stop was a metaphor for the opinions of other people. When no bus came, no one had noticed the stegosaurus.
