Bending Moment

  • If there is a beam attached to a wall, if force is applied to the other end of the beam that is not attahced we create a moment

  • This moment is similar to torque that will force the beam to bend

  • Moment or Torque = Force x Distance

  • Distance in this case is the perpendicular distance (between point 1 and point 2)

  • If you double the force you doulbe the moment, if you double the distance you double the moment

  • Increasing distance is also called leverage

    • although leverage can also imply a non bending moment

    • internally would be bending (for the tool being used)

    • externally would be non-bending (rotation of the system)

Solve for the displacement field using minimum potential energy involving variational calculus (hmmm)
