Definitions of Medical Terms
Prefix: A small component added to beginning of term.
Stem: The core element that encapsulates the essential meaning of the term; it can stand alone with its own meaning.
Suffix: An affix placed at end of a stem word that changes its meaning.

Acute: Having short duration and relatively severe condition
Alopecia: Loss of hair.
Anemia: Condition in which blood is deficient in hemoglobin/red blood cells (RBCs).

Atrophy: Decrease in size or wasting away of body part.
Chronic: Condition of long duration (Opposed to acute)

Anatomical Position & Directional Terms
Dorsal: Relating to the back.
Ventral: Referring to the underside or belly.
Caudal: Directed towards the rear or tail.
Cranial: Directed towards the head.
Proximal: Nearest to a given point or structure.
Distal: Farthest from a given point or structure.
Rostral: Pertaining to or towards the nose or beak.
Plantar: Underside of hind limb from the tarsal joint distally.
Palmar: Underside of forelimb from the carpal joint distally.
Superficial: On or just beneath the surface.
Deep: Closest to the center of the body or limb.
Median Plane: Vertical plane dividing body into right and left halves
Medial: Nearer to midline of body.
Lateral: Towards side/away from median plane.
