Momentum

momentum means how difficult it is to bring an object to a stop

p = m * v

momentum = mass x velocity
(kg m/s) (kg) (m/s)

momentum is a vector - it has a direction

e.g. a car of 100kg travels at 5m/s what is it’s momentum?
100 × 5 = 500 kg m/s

Conservation of momentum

in a collision, momentum is always conserved

momentum before = momentum after

e.g. two shopping trolleys A (5kg) and B (10kg) collide and move off together, A is moving L→R with a velocity of 5m/s. B is moving R→L with a velocity of 10m/s. what is their final velocity?
