1. と 思います (to omoimasu → “I think…”)

• Verb (plain form) + と 思います

• い-adjective (any tense) + と 思います

• な-adjective / noun + だ と 思います

2. Plain Past Tense (Dictionary → Plain Past)

• 行く → 行った

• 食べる → 食べた

• 聞く → 聞いた

• 話す → 話した

• 旅行する → 旅行した

• する → した

• ある → あった

• 教える → 教えた

3. Adjectives

• 伝統的 (でんとうてき) → traditional

• つまらない → boring

• 美しい (うつくしい) → beautiful

• すばらしい → amazing

• 近い (ちかい) → near

Conjoining な-adjectives with で

• 伝統的で きれいです = Traditional and pretty

• 楽しくて にぎやかです = Fun and lively

• 安くなくて 楽しくないです = Not cheap and not fun

• 安くなくて 楽しくなかったです = Was not cheap and not fun (past tense)

4. ない-form (casual negative)

• Polite → Casual Negative

• 飲みます → 飲まない

• 泳ぎます → 泳がない

• 遊びます → 遊ばない

Exception: Godan verbs ending with -います → change to わ

• 買います → 買わない

• 洗います → 洗わない

Ichidan verbs

• 食べます → 食べない

Irregular

• 来ます → 来ない (こない)

• 借ります → 借りない (かりない)

• 起きます → 起きない

• できます → できない

• あります → ない

5. Grammar Constructions

• Verb (ない-form) + でください

• 食べないでください = Please don’t eat

• 話さないでください = Please don’t speak

✔ Giving Advice

• Verb (た-form) + ほうがいいです = You should…

• Verb (ない-form) + ほうがいいです = You shouldn’t…

• Example:

• そのホテルに泊まらないほうがいいです。= It’s better not to stay at that hotel.

• 体によくないから、コーラを飲まないほうがいいと思います。= Because it’s not good for your body, I think you shouldn’t drink cola.

• Verb (なくてもいいです) = You don’t have to…

• 行かなくてもいいです = You don’t have to go

• 勉強しなくてもいいです = You don’t have to study

• 宿題をしなくてもいいです = You don’t have to do homework

6. する Expressions

• する = To do

• したいです = I want to do

• することができます = I can do

• することが好きです = I like to do

• して楽しみです = I enjoy doing

• して楽しみました = I enjoyed doing

• してみたいです = I want to try doing

7. Comparison Structures

• A より B のほうが adj です = B is more adj than A

• ドーナツより さしみのほうが ヘルシーです。= Sashimi is healthier than donuts.

• Both / Neither

• どちらも + adj です

• Comparing Nouns

• Noun1 とくらべて、Noun2 のほうが adj です

• オーストラリアとくらべて、日本の学生のほうが いそがしいそうです。= Compared to Australia, Japanese students seem busier.
