Blood Volume and Pulse Rates
Blood Volume: Refers to the total volume of blood present in the circulatory system.
Pulse and its Measurement:
- Pulse: A palpable rhythm felt due to arterial blood flow.
- Can be felt by palpating an artery lightly against underlying bone or muscle.
- Pulse Rate: The number of pulsing sensations occurring in one minute.
- Measurement Method: Commonly measured at various locations where arteries are close to the surface of the skin, such as:
- Radial region (wrist)
- Ulnar region (inner wrist)
- Femoral artery (thigh)
- Popliteal artery (behind the knee)
- Posterior tibial artery (ankle)
- Dorsalis pedis artery (top of the foot)
Cardiac Output
Definition: The volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute.
- Calculation: The cardiac output (CO) is determined by the formula:

- SV = Stroke Volume (the volume of blood ejected from the ventricle with each heartbeat)

Normal Values: In an adult, the average values for HR and SV may vary but are closely tied to individual health parameters.
Stroke Volume and Its Effects on Blood Dynamics
Stroke Volume (SV): Approximately 60 to 70 mL of blood enters the aorta with each ventricular contraction.
Aortic Pulse Wave:
- Upon each SV ejection, the aorta's walls distend (stretch), creating a pulse wave.
- Pulse Wave Velocity:
- The pulse wave travels at significantly higher speeds:
- Approximately 15 times faster through the aorta.
- Approximately 100 times faster through smaller arteries than the ejected volume of blood itself.
Peripheral Arterial Pulse: The pulse wave can be felt at peripheral arteries when it reaches those points, confirming effective cardiac function and circulation efficiency.
