Ancient Greek Philosophy and the Foundations of Truth
Introduction to Philosophy

Pythagoras (570 BCE to 495 BCE)
- Roles: Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician and scientist.
- Pythagorean Theorem: He is credited with formulating the mathematical theorem:
- Community of Learners: His intellectual work earned him a large following. He established a community of learners who were dedicated to the study of both religion and philosophy.
Heraclitus (535 BCE to 475 BCE)
- The Logos: Heraclitus proposed that everything in existence is based on a higher order or plan, which he called the Logos.
- Permanence of Change: For Heraclitus, change is a permanent aspect of the human condition.

Democritus (460 BCE to 370 BCE)
- Natural Phenomena: Democritus devoted himself to studying the causes of natural phenomena.

- Title: He is often referred to as "The Laughing Philosopher."

Diogenes of Sinope (412 BCE to 323 BCE)
- Virtuous Living: Diogenes was a known advocate for living a simple and virtuous life.

Epicurus (341 BCE to 270 BCE)

- Epicureanism: His views led to the creation of the Epicurean school of philosophy. This school believes that the combination of wisdom and simple living results in a life free from fear and pain.

Socrates (470 BCE to 270 BCE)

Plato (427 BCE to 347 BCE)
- Relationship to Socrates: A student of Socrates, Plato documented his mentor's teachings and incorporated his own original ideas into these writings.

- The Academy: He established a famous school of learning known as the Ακαδημία (Academy).

Aristotle (384 BCE to 322 BCE)
- Background: Aristotle attended the Academy and was a prominent student of Plato.
- Empiricism: For Aristotle, all ideas and views must be based on perception. He argued that our reality is defined by what we can sense and perceive.

The Nature of Truth and Knowledge
- Knowledge: Knowledge is defined as the clear awareness and understanding of something. It is comprised of ideas and beliefs that we know to be true.
- Propositions: These are statements about the world or reality. Propositions may or may not carry truth.
- Facts: These are specific propositions or statements that are observed to be real or truthful.
- Claims: Claims are statements that are not immediately or evidently known to be true.
- Example: "I know that my school is the best school in the city."
- Analysis: This statement cannot be taken as an automatic truth because it is not immediately evident. It requires further examination to establish its veracity.
Elements of Critical Thinking and Propositional Logic
- Opinions: Opinions consist of statements that provide facts but also include conclusions or perspectives regarding specific situations. They often advance a belief or provide an explanation.
- Bias: Opinions are frequently influenced by bias. This means the person expressing the opinion has views or tendencies that affect how they see reality.
- Conclusions: A conclusion is a judgment that is based on certain facts.
- Beliefs: Beliefs are statements expressing convictions that are not easily or clearly explained by facts alone.
- Explanations: These are statements that assume a claim is already true and focus on providing the reasons why it is true.
- Arguments: An argument is a series of statements intended to provide reasons to convince a reader or listener that a specific claim or opinion is truthful.
Types of Logical Fallacies
Failacies are products of faulty reasoning. They may be unintentional or intentional, often used when a person is desperate to convince others of their arguments.
1. Ad Hominem (Personal Attack)
- Definition: Attacking the person's character or credibility instead of the merits of their argument.
- Situation: During a discussion on project management, a coworker suggests changing the team's software. You reply, "You don't even know how to set up your email signature properly, so why should we listen to your project management ideas?"
- Fallacy Reason: The person's ability to set up an email signature is irrelevant to the validity of their software suggestion.
2. False Cause (Correlation vs. Causation)
- Definition: Assuming that because one event followed another, the first event must have caused the second.
- Situation: A business owner paints their store exterior red. A few weeks later, sales spike. The owner concludes, "Painting the building red is exactly what caused our sales to go up!"
- Fallacy Reason: The sales increase could be due to other factors, such as a seasonal holiday or a social media campaign; the color change and the sales increase may be coincidental.
3. False Dilemma (Either/Or Fallacy)
- Definition: Reducing a complex issue to only two extreme options while ignoring other possible solutions.
- Situation: A city council member says regarding the budget, "Either we approve the funds to build this new sports complex, or we don't care about the youth in our community."
- Fallacy Reason: This ignores middle-ground options, such as upgrading existing parks or funding after-school programs without building a new complex.
4. Bandwagon
- Definition: Arguing that something is the best choice simply because it is popular or widely accepted.
- Situation: A salesperson tells a hesitant customer, "You should really get this one; it's the best-selling phone in the country right now, and almost everyone has one!"
- Fallacy Reason: Popularity does not determine whether a product is objectively the best choice for an individual's specific needs.
5. Slippery Slope
- Definition: Claiming that one minor action will inevitably lead to a catastrophic chain reaction without providing proof of such a sequence.
- Situation: A student asks for a paper extension. The professor responds, "If I give you an extension, then I will have to give extensions to everyone in the class. Then, no one will turn their work in on time, and the entire educational system will collapse!"
- Fallacy Reason: The argument unfairly links a single extension to the total collapse of the educational system without evidence that such a result is certain or even likely.
