Bloody Sunday

  • St. Petersburg, Russia, 1905

  • Father Gapon established Assembly of the Russian Factory and Mill Workers to promote workers rights in 1903

  • Went on strike and drafted petition to the czar because were struggling from social inequalities posed by laissez-faire capitalism

  • Led workers and members of the assembly to march on the palace to deliver the petition

  • Father Gapon had already notified the authorities of the petition and the march

  • Approx. 10000 soldiers were placed around the palace

  • Then they began firing on the peaceful protesters

  • Czar Nicholas II was not in the palace, and had not ordered his soldiers to fire, but he was blamed anyways

  • As a result, protests popped up around the country which eventually led to the Russian Revolution
