Revolution within a Revolution: Rock n Roll changes everything. The main record companies are RCA Victor, Columbia, Capital, Mercury, and Decca, but then a bunch of smaller, independent, and successful companies are popping up. There was a pattern that was predictable hits, making it popular for a while, replaced by new artists who were only popular for a couple of weeks and repeated all over again,

Rock Enters Its Second Decade: The 1960s is the second decade. Music was all over the place.

Rapid Social Change: Society was in disarray since Kennedy became president, and racial justice, and love with brothers and sisters. Society became desensitized to violence. Kennedy was killed leaving the country in a depression.

America’s Cultural Inferiority Complex: The USA always had an inferiority complex “real culture” that came from Europe. Only in the 20th century did classical composers begin to work on the American styles. Even then it was based on European works. We took opinions from the Europeans who finally agreed jazz was all right. Rock N Roll was an embarrassment. The Beatles proved it wrong when the British Invasion happened.

The Early Beatles:

  • John Lennon was from Liverpool and was born on October 9, 1940. His mother left him a year later to go with a new family. His father left him with his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George who cared for him since his father was a ship steward. Listened to Elvis in 1956. Made a skiffle music band.

  • Paul McCartney was born June 18, 1942, He was amazing in composing music. His mother died. Paul’s dad was in a successful society band in the 1920s. When Skiffle music became popular he got a guitar from his father.

The Quarry Men:

  • Paul and John became friends. John was a rebel while Paul was more stingy.

  • Personalities made great songwriters.

  • John flunked school in Quarry Bank High School and only went to art college because of his aunt.

  • Skiffle music style ended and focused more on Rock n Roll for the Quarry Men.

  • George meets Paul at Liverpool Institue in the 1950s, hated school, and adopts the rebel look. Used the guitar and copy bass from American Rock n Roll.

  • John mom died and he still went to college.

The Silver Beetles:

  • Stu Sutcliffe was gifted but antisocial. Dressed like countercultural. Plays bass guitar to play in John's group.

  • Stu said Beetles in honor of Buddy Holly’s Cricket.

  • Changed to Silver Beetles, then Long John and the Silver Beetles.

  • Changed it to Beatles as a pun to beat.

Early Performances:

  • The Scottish Tour was low budget

  • The Germany Trip in Liverpool.

The Cavern Club:

  • Tavern in a cellar because of WW2. Hired The Beatles to play.

  • Went back to hamburger to play at Top Ten Club with Tony Sheridan.

  • Stu left.

Brian Epstein:

  • Disco jokey Bob Wooler early fan and told others to listen to them.

  • Brian Epstien sees teen selling out Beatles.

  • Went to go get stuff from them and liked them

  • Brian became their manager and tried to get them a contract.

George Martin and Parlophone:

  • 1952 went back to audition for Parophone.

  • George wanted to make it famous.

  • Gave a contract to them for a year and four songs.

    • Final Pieces:

      • Everything moved fast and got a good record label.

      • Richard poor and broken family. Named Ringo.

      • Starkey was Starr.

      • Ringo got Beatle haircut and said by to Rorty Storm.

      • Public appearance:

  • They didn’t do any wrong. They experimented a lot to stay on top while others didn’t

  • John and Paul wrote different music. John rebel Paul Conservative.

Yesterday: Paul made a song that we would play by himself. It’s a pop song. Hits number one in America and became most recorded music ever.

Rubber Soul: First album without their name. Very experimental. Used the sitar. George finds the sitar. John changed perspective on music. Took Beatles to make new albums longer and would drop singles every once in a while.

Revolver: Was made for a US tour. They got used to iconoclastic remarks made by John. 30 radio stations banned the beatles since a magnize called the Datebook quoted them. Less Christianity. 1966 tour a success.

Maturing Musical Style: They pushed the boundaries.

  • Eleanor Rigby- String quartet of Yesterday and adds a different step on using a string octet. Focus on two lonely people.

  • Yellow Submarine- A drug song.

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever: A double single.
