Hypertensive Crisis

- Two main types:
- Hypertensive Urgency: Defined as blood pressure > 180/120 mmHg without acute target organ damage.
- Hypertensive Emergency: Defined as blood pressure > 180/120 mmHg with acute target organ damage.
- Interventions:
- Immediate assessment of the patient.
- The first action to take when entering the room with a patient in crisis:
- Positioning: Place the patient in a safe, comfortable position; typically, moving them to a seated position can help.
Etiology of Hypertension
- Understand the factors contributing to hypertension:
- Genetic predisposition plays a significant role.
- High-risk groups include:
- African Americans: Statistically, they are identified as having the highest risk for developing hypertension.
