Cell Transportation
Passive Transport :
DIFFUSION - movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
OSMOSIS - diffusion of water across a membrane
FACILITATED DIFFUSION - carrier proteins/channels move molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
FILTRATION - water + salutes are forced through a capillary wall
Active Transport : ATP REQUIRED
SOLUTE PUMPING - a protein moves substances from low conc. --> high conc.
EXCOYTOSIS - movement of substance out of cell
ENDOCYTOSIS - movement of substance into cell
What is the difference between a hypertonic and hypotonic solution? What would happen to a red blood cell if it were placed in these two solutions?
Hypertonic - has a elevated/high level of solute
RBC would shrivel/crenate
Hypotonic - has a low level of solute (diluted)
RBC would swell-->burst
