Adolescent mental health is significantly influenced by trauma, particularly regarding its impact on the physical brain and its ability to form accurate memories. The theories of cognitive development introduced by Piaget suggest that the brain progresses through essential stages crucial for productive growth during childhood. When these developmental periods are disrupted by traumatic experiences, serious repercussions may follow, including lapses in memory or childhood amnesia, which have been linked to trauma in early years. Researchers have not yet pinpointed a specific developmental stage that is particularly susceptible to memory loss or identified which traumas exert the most influence. Nonetheless, there is a consensus that trauma and memory manipulation can adversely affect autobiographical memories during adolescence and may lead to additional psychological problems (Barrouillet, 2015; Brennen et al., 2010).
