The United States:

The Roaring 20’s:

  • The U.S did very well at first.
    • They proficted a lot off of the war
    • Their land was also unharmed.
  • During this time:
    • Women gained the right to vote
    • Better Business
    • Lots of money/ Very good economy
    • Hollywood began
    • People became more comfortable.
League of Nations:
  • The U.S did not join though it was president Wilson’s idea.
    • The congress voted against it.
    • SInce the U.S was so strong, not joining the League made the group very weak.

The Depression:

  • After a while the economy began to turn
  • Other European countries were taking loans from the U.S which they couldn’t pay back.
  • They also overproduced
  • And the stalk market crashed.
  • All of this led to the U.S economy going into the Great Depression.

FDR:

→ Franklin D. Roosevelt

  • Came up with the New Deal as a way to help the economy
    • It created lots of new work for people
    • Worked somewhat

Great Britain:

  • Their land was mostly untouched
  • Went into a depression
  • They were very weak
  • Workers went on strike for better conditions and pay
  • They switched their government many times
  • Winston Churchill- Became Prime Minister and led Britain into WWII.

France:

  • Was affected a lot by the war
    • Debt
    • Lots of destroyed land
    • Unemployment.
  • They still hated Germany, and the money which they owed France couldn’t get payed back all at once.
    • This made France suffer a lot.
  • They also built the Maginot Line
    • A line of concrete bunkers, along their border with Germany so they wouldn’t invade again.
    • Many people thought it was a bad idea, because it used up lots of money which could have been used elsewhere.
  • They also switched their government many times.

Japan:

  • Were extremely unhappy with the Treaty of Versailles. (Like many others)
    • They got Germany’s islands north of the equator, which isn’t much.
    • They thought it was racist, since they didn’t get much.
  • Were also made the being in the League of Nations wouldn’t let them take over more land.
    • They wanted to expand, so eventually they will leave the League.

Italy:

  • Like the other countries, they went into a depression
    • They also got very little from the Treaty of Versailles.
  • Benito Mussolini, made a fascist party, and quickly became a leader.
    • Fascist→ Complete control over all aspects of society
  • When he became the leader of Italy he did make it a fascist government.
    • His efforts did help in some ways though.
    • He got many people jobs
    • And got some land back.
  • Mussolini would eventually sign the pact of steel with Hitler, making the Axis Powers.

Germany:

  • Faced many of the same problems as Italy and other countries
    • But they also had to pay reparations, and were humiliated by their loss in the war.
  • They caused major inflation, which made their money almost worthless.
  • The two parties who wanted to fix Germany were:
    • The Communists
    • The Nazis
    • The Nazis were led by Adolf Hitler.
  • Eventually Hitler and his party got more and more popular.
    • He had the Prime Minister, make him chancellor, and the Prime Minister died Hitler took over.
  • Hitler gave the Germans a scapegoat for their problems. This was the Jews.
    • He also believed that the German Aryans were the best race.
  • He made pacts with both Italy and Russia, and became a big reason for the start of WWII.

Overall:

  • Not many were happy with the Treaty Of Versailles
  • Many countries went into a depression
  • The League of Nations was very Weak
  • The Kellogg-Briand Pact was signed
    • Outlawed war, and said to solve conflicts in a peaceful manner.
