Dien Bien Phu

-Japan kicked out of Vietnam, after WW2, France steps in

-Viet Communists under Ho Chi Mrh defeat French colonial forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954

-French troops leave, US tries to fill void

-In July, Geneva Accords divide the country at the 17th parallel, creating a North and South Vietnam

-US assumes responsibility of providing anti-communist aid to South Vietnam 

-SU and China Provide weapons to North 

1964-Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

-North Vietnam patrol boats fire on USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin. 

-Boats are “dealt with accordingly” 

-A couple of days later, the Maddox reports being fired on again (sus)

-President Lyndon B. Johnson states we need to double down our efforts and retaliate against Comms in Vietnam

-Congress approves the Gulf of Res, granting authority to send US troops to Soviet Union

1968-Tet Offensive 

-Viet Cong (Southern COmm. Guerrillas) and North Vietnam troops launch attacks across South Vietnam on Jan 30, start of lunar year tet

1969-Vietnamization

-Pres Nixon announces his plan, designed to withdraw US grand forces from Vietnam, turn forces over to South Vietnam (THEY GIVE UP)

1973-VW Agreement (Paris Treaty)

-South, North, and Viet Cong establish ceasefire

-South Vietnam fell to North 2 days later

1968-Brezhnev Doctrine

-Branhaven (guy replaces Khrushchev) says that US will intervene anytime Comm country is in threat

-Strategic Arms Limitation talks placed limit on both submarine launched and intercontinental missiles 

1969-Salt

1972-Nixon visits China

-1st pres to visit communist China, meeting with Mao

-Normalization of relations was in all nations best interest (no longer hating)

-Change in feels

1983-Star Wars

-Ronald Regan outlined his Strategic Defense initiative, or “Star Wars”

-Defined as a space-based defensive shield that would use lasers and tech to destroy missiles far above Earth

1985-Gorbachev comes to power

-In March 1985, Mikhail GOrbachev comes to power in SU (usher era to reform)

-Perestroika (economic reform)

-Glasnost (means freedom of expression, openness)

1987-INF

-On Dec 8 1947, Regan and Gorbachev signed intermediate Range Nuclear Force Treaty

1989-Berlin Wall Falls

-Gorbachev renounce the Brezhnev Doctrine which pledged to use SU to protect its interests in Eastern Europe

-After, massive public protests in Eastern Germany and Eastern Europe, walls falls on Nov 9

1990-1991 German Unification and End of SU

-On Oct 3, East and West Germany united as federal republic of Germany
